Where we look
robots.txt Sitemap: lines first, then /sitemap.xml and /sitemap_index.xml. If none of those return 200, we warn.
A sitemap is not a ranking boost
It does not force indexing. It stops Google guessing. Junk URLs in the file waste crawl time — keep it to canonical, indexable pages.
Submit it anyway
Once the file exists, add the Sitemap line to robots.txt and submit the URL in Search Console. Two minutes, permanent gain in discovery.
